St Nicholas Church Broadwey, Weymouth, is located on the B3159 Dorchester Road, just 100 yards South of the ‘Littlemoor’ traffic lights. Standing outside the Church and looking around at the surrounding area, with the ancient Roman Road close by and the river at the bottom of Mill Street, it would be hard not to imagine an early Roman or even pre-Roman settlement here in Broadwey around 2000 years ago. It may well be that the present Church stands on the site of a early Saxon Church, itself built from the materials previously used for a Roman cultic centre.

Like many Norman Churches, changes have taken place over the years. A toilet and Sunday School room was added in 1985. On Wednesday October 3rd 2001, all of the pews were removed from the body of the Church.

Two angled pews were retained adjacent to the font, and one high quality pew was removed to the “St Michael’s Chapel” (on the South Side of the Sanctuary) along with a matching Modesty Screen.

The Church was then re-decorated. A new carpeted worship area was created, and the children’s area was re-ordered. The sound system was enhanced with new speakers and a Loop for the Hard of Hearing. A new All Season frontal is now on the Holy table. 165 new soft-furnished chairs arrived on Friday 26th October. A nappy-changing area is located in a side room.

The Sunday School Room is equipped with new chairs and has a TV and Video. In the Church we have added a screen and data projector which enhances our music group led worship and all-age teaching.

St Laurence - Upwey

The Sunday congregation numbers between 40 – 55 with a broad age range and the organ and choir lead the worship.

The usual pattern is:

1st Sunday Parish Communion (CW) with the Revd Brian Ellis
2nd Sunday Parish Communion (CW) with our Honary OLM – Revd Pat Jones
3rd Sunday Family Worship/Parish Communion with the Rector
4th Sunday Morning Worship with our Upwey (Licensed Lay Minister led) Worship Group.
5th Sunday Usually Parish Communion.

If, or rather, when, you come into St Laurence Upwey, you will be sure of a welcome. Throughout the year the Village sees many visitors, especially from Easter to late autumn.

The Wishing Well Café is still a favourite eating place for many as it has been for a hundred years.

Next door is The Upwey Old School, now the Village Hall, scene of a great variety of craft displays nearly every day of the visitor season. Just another 60 yards away is the gateway into one of the loveliest Churches in Dorset . Although a large extract from our Church guide follows here, the Church is not a museum, it is a place where Christians come to worship on Sunday mornings and until Jesus returns, will be the spiritual meeting place of our community.

We have a small Junior Church led by CRB checked grown ups – and we have coffee – squash and biscuits after the service – which lasts about 60 minutes. Tuesday Mornings at 10.00am we have a short Prayer Book Communion.

Central to our worship is a real – living faith in the God who meets us in Jesus Christ. It is this Jesus Christ who dwells in each believer by His Holy Spirit. If you have a faith do come and share it with us. If you only have a little or are still searching – then you are welcome to come and help yourself to some of ours – it’s all free.

We do not have all the answers to life – the universe and everything – we are pilgrims on a journey. But we know that the God who called and travelled with Abraham is the God who journeys with us. We like to think that our worship at St Laurence’s is uncomplicated and helps to sustains us in our discipleship.
