Year One Farm trip

We had a lovely day at Traveller's Rest farm. 

We explored Farmer George's farm. We looked in the grain store, dug up some barley from the fields and visited the cattle. We were very lucky to meet a newly born calf. The calf was still very young so had not taken its first steps. After seeing the cattle, we went to visit Theo the bull. We explored the woodland, looked at deciduous and evergreen trees and then explored the hedgerows for berries. We spoke about the natural world around us and the farmed land. George spoke about crops that he grows and how he makes sure there is enough pasture for his livestock. Our final adventure on the tractor and trailer ride was a visit to the flock of sheep. Farmer George and his family had hand reared all of the sheep we were able to visit. We fed them bread and toast and felt how thick their fleeces were. 

After lunch, we made soup by preparing the vegetables. Then we created bread rolls and painted some pictures of our morning. We had a lovely time and learnt lots about farming in Dorset. 

STEM Week with visiting rabbits

We had a wonderful visit from Kim and her rabbits this week. Kim taught us about the rabbits and how we can feed them properly to help them to stay healthy. She taught us about how rabbits show us that they are happy or scared. 

We all had the opportunity to touch the rabbits and watch them eating. Thank you to Kim for answering all of our questions. 

This week, Year One have been learning about the Bog Baby. They have used their skills of reading the text to focus on key facts about the Bog Baby. After this, they created their own version of the Bog Baby and labelled it. 
 

Charity litter pick.

Year 1 have been working very hard this week cleaning and collecting litter from around the grounds. They have been so enthusiastic and are really excited about raising money for charity.

Visit from a physiotherapist.

Mr Rose came in to talk to us about being a physiotherapist. He showed us the equipment he used to help people recover from injuries or surgeries. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning new technical names for their bones! 

Scientists in Year One 

Year One have been scientists exploring their senses. 
 

They have been tasting different foods and describing them to their friends. 
 

We really enjoyed trying the different foods, especially the salty popcorn. 

Leaf Explorers

Year One were focussing on their classification and identification skills in Science. We have been exploring the school grounds to do this. 

Sharing to divide

This week we have been practising our skills of sharing. We used this to help us find the answers to simple number sentences. We have then used the skill to help us find fractions of amounts. 

We have been using the language of 'equal groups' to help us share fairly. Miss Loader tried to share out some imaginary biscuits unfairly, we helped her to fix her muddles and showed her a speedy method. 

Creature Teacher

Year One were greeted with a selection of animals this morning. We learnt about mammals, amphibians, insects, birds and reptiles. This has linked with our learning in Science. 

We met a pygmy African hedgehog, an albino corn snake, a lizard, a barn owl, some hissing cockroaches and a tomato frog. 

We were able to touch and hold all of the creatures, if we wished, apart from the poisonous tomato frog. We learnt that if we did touch him, we could poison him too. 

We asked some excellent questions about the animals such as 'Are they warm blooded or cold blooded?' 'Does it like to bathe in the sun?' 

Nature Detectives

Year One have spent time exploring our school environments as part of STEM week. They have been pond dipping and minibeast hunting. 

They found newts, tadpoles, froglets, water fleas, water hogs and lots of nymphs. 

They practised using their observational skills to identify the different minibeasts that were found. 

Coronation Celebrations 

Year 1 started the morning by remembering the Queen. They saw snippets of the coronation from nearly 70 years ago and spoke about what will change and what will be the same. They continued to make their collage style union jacks, ready for our Coronation party in the afternoon.  We gathered with Year 2 to work in house teams to recreate a portrait of King Charles. 

Mrs Morris taught us all about the process of a coronation and the rest of afternoon was full of scones, jam, cream and games, where fun was had by all!
